What do the clarity letters describe?

Clarity concerns internal features called inclusions and surface features called blemishes. GIA assesses clarity at 10× magnification. VVS1 and VVS2 sit above VS1 and VS2 on its scale, with the 1 grades above the corresponding 2 grades. See GIA’s clarity explanation for the complete scale.

A clarity grade is one part of a diamond description. It should be read alongside origin, carat weight, colour and the other information relevant to the selected stone.

Will you always see a difference between VS and VVS?

No. The position, size and nature of features matter when looking at an individual diamond. GIA’s VS and VVS comparison explains the grading distinction in more detail. Do not treat a broad clarity label as a substitute for inspecting the actual stone or suitable images.

If a jeweller uses the phrase “eye-clean,” ask what viewing conditions and distance they mean. Record the explanation for the diamond you are considering rather than assuming the phrase has one universal meaning.

What should you ask before choosing a higher grade?

  • Which independent report describes this specific diamond?
  • Can I review a suitable image or discuss the stone’s appearance?
  • Which features affect the choice for this setting?
  • What changes in the complete ring quote if I choose this option?
  • Am I comparing stones with the same origin, shape and weight?

For a bespoke commission, tell the designer whether your priority is a particular grade, appearance, outline or complete budget. These are different briefs and can lead to different options.

How should you read clarity choices on our website?

For supported natural-diamond configurations, the selection interface shows the grades associated with priced catalogue options. Read all selected fields and the confirmed complete quote. A product photograph shows the original design; it is not a photograph of every selectable diamond.

Lab-grown Select and Luxe options use the website’s stated specifications. Do not assume a commercial package name translates directly into one independent laboratory clarity grade. Ask what documentation accompanies the diamond you choose.

Common questions

Is VVS automatically the best choice for everyone?

No. It is a higher clarity category, but your decision should reflect the individual diamond, its appearance, the design and your priorities.

Does clarity tell me whether a diamond is natural?

No. Origin and clarity are different pieces of information. Confirm the diamond origin separately.

Can a product render show the clarity of my chosen stone?

No. A design visualisation is not an inspection image or grading report for the selected stone.
