How do you match a report to a diamond?

Ask for the report number before buying and use the issuing laboratory’s own verification service where available. Compare the details with the seller’s description, including shape, weight and measurements. If an inscription is mentioned, ask how the seller will confirm that it matches.

Do not rely on a cropped screenshot with no identifiable issuer or report number. Ask for a clear record you can read and keep with your order information.

Which information does the report contain?

The fields depend on the laboratory, service and diamond. GIA’s natural-diamond report services describe different report formats. Its Diamond Grading Report includes a 4Cs assessment and clarity diagram; other formats can present information differently.

Check the origin and any stated treatments, then review the fields actually provided. Do not assume every report, especially across different natural and lab-grown services, uses an identical layout or grading format.

What does a report not tell you about the finished ring?

A stone report does not specify your ring size, band width, metal finish, engraving, production date or payment arrangements. It is also different from a replacement-value appraisal. Keep the report separate from the written jewellery order so you can check both.

For a multi-stone design, ask what documentation applies to the centre and accent stones. Do not assume that every small diamond has its own individual grading report, or that a total carat weight refers to one reported stone.

What should you ask the jeweller before payment?

  • Which laboratory issued the document and can I verify it directly?
  • Does it describe the diamond selected for this order?
  • Is the diamond natural or lab-grown, and are treatments disclosed?
  • Which documents will I receive with the finished jewellery?
  • Are the setting, sizing, complete price and delivery terms recorded separately?

For Victoria Diamonds online selections, a design photograph is not evidence of a specific report. Ask the atelier about documentation for your actual configuration before ordering. Read our custom commission checklist if you are developing a new design.

Common questions

Is a grading report the same as a valuation?

No. A grading report describes gemological characteristics; a valuation serves a different purpose. Ask which document you need.

Does every diamond in a bracelet have its own report?

Do not assume so. Ask what documentation is provided for the individual stones or the complete piece.

Does a report guarantee that a ring will suit me?

No. Fit, design, setting proportions and personal preference still need to be considered separately.
