A tennis necklace brings a continuous line of diamonds around the neckline. The right choice depends on how it sits and moves, as well as its sparkle. Compare length, individual stone size and construction before comparing total carat weight.

Read per-stone and total carat weight separately

Per-stone weight describes one diamond; total carat weight adds the diamonds in the stated necklace. A graduated necklace uses different sizes, usually with larger stones towards the front. A uniform design aims for a consistent visual line. Ask for the number and dimensions of stones, not just a total.

For example, 60 diamonds at 0.10 ct each give 6.00 ct total. This arithmetic does not determine the finished length: settings, gaps and the clasp also take space. A bigger total can come from larger stones, more stones or a longer necklace.

Choose length around your own neckline

Starting points for a fitting—not guaranteed positions
LengthMetric equivalentWhat to compare
15 inches38.1 cmA higher fit; check comfort around the neck
16 inches40.6 cmTry with the necklines you wear most
18 inches45.7 cmA lower position on many people; check layering

These are useful measurements to try, rather than universal choker or collarbone positions. Neck size, posture and the necklace’s construction change where it falls. Measure an existing necklace you like or use a soft tape, then confirm the finished length with the jeweller.

Look for smooth movement and a secure closure

Articulated links should move comfortably and help the necklace follow the body. Ask to see it worn and moving: a flat photograph cannot demonstrate whether it turns over or sits evenly. Check that settings feel smooth against skin and clothing.

Inspect how the clasp closes and whether it has a secondary safety feature. Box clasps are one possible construction, not a guarantee of security. Ask for a demonstration and arrange professional checks if a link or closure feels loose.

Balance the design with everyday comfort

Try a delicate line alone and alongside other chains before deciding on scale. For a more prominent necklace, consider whether the weight and flexibility still feel comfortable. Compare stone matching, finish and the full quotation alongside size.
